Maria Semple spent her early years traveling around Europe with her bohemian parents. That came to an end when her father, Lorenzo Semple, Jr., while living in Torremolinos, Spain wrote a pilot for the TV series Batman. He airmailed it in and the family moved to LA.
Lorenzo went on to write a bunch of movies (Pretty Poison, Parallax View, Three Days of the Condor, King Kong, Flash Gordon). In 1975 the family moved to Aspen, Colorado. Maria attended boarding school at Choate Rosemary and college at Barnard.
Maria moved to Los Angeles and wrote screenplays which never got made, and then TV shows. Ellen, Mad About You and Arrested Development, plus a bunch of others. She quit to write fiction. THIS ONE IS MINE was published in 2008.
In 2008 Maria, her boyfriend George Meyer and their daughter moved to Seattle just because. It was a difficult adjustment. Maria wrote WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE. It came out in 2012 and became an international bestseller. TODAY WILL BE DIFFERENT is her latest.
